Bill Murray keeps slamming it, and everyone else keeps talking about how it’s going to happen, with work constantly being done on the script. One of the established points of the new sequel would have a fresh batch of Ghostbuster candidates reviving the business to battle whatever ghouls and spirits are causing a ruckus, but now it looks like a major piece of information is being floated as to what the connection would be between the younger crew and the beloved veterans.

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!!!

Bloody Disgusting has the scoop that Oscar, Dana Barrett’s son as introduced in GHOSTBUSTERS 2 would be revealed to be Peter Venkman’s kid as well, and, at the age of around 21, he’d be grown and ready enough to take over the family business.

Hmmm…

The Kidd went to the archives to play back all talk of the Peter/Dana break-up and discussion of Oscar’s father, and, while it would be a stretch given the time frame for such an event, it’s not impossible. GHOSTBUSTERS 2 takes place 5 years after the first film, when Oscar is about 8 months old. That would mean that somewhere in the neighborhood of about 18 months, Dana would have had to have gotten pregnant right around the same time that she and Peter split, gotten together with another dude who could easily have been confused as Oscar’s father because of the timing, and then broke things off with him after Oscar was born, while hiding the possibility from Peter until now. Wow… sounds like a MAURY episode to me, and not GHOSTBUSTERS 3.

No information is given about Oscar’s dad other than that he was another musician who left, because he got a great job opportunity and took it… something that could have easily been done by someone who knew they were not the real father of someone.

Turning one of the new generation of Ghostbusters into Peter’s kid could work story-wise, and it might change Murray’s idea of only returning if he’s a ghost himself, but the bigger question that plagues such a choice is: who could possibly pull off playing Bill Murray’s son? What actor has the chops to make you believe he’s the offspring of Peter Venkman? Because none are coming to The Kidd’s mind right now.
