A Yogi Bear Poster That You Won’t Hate
I know, I know… how many of these cartoons from our childhood and our parents’ childhood and our parents’ parents’ childhood are going to be adapted into a movie? Well, it’s going to be at least one more (probably quite a few more than that, to be perfectly honest with you), with YOGI BEAR hitting this holiday season. And, after the debacles that have been ALVIN & THE CHIPMUNKS (the first movie and the SQUEAKQUEL), SCOOBY-DOO, MARMADUKE, etc., it’s easy to see where you’d roll your eyes at the very mention of a YOGI BEAR movie. But, after looking at the teaser poster for it (courtesy of Yahoo!), I’m a bit more optimistic than I was when I started writing this.
Dan Aykroyd voices the title role, and Justin Timberlake will voice Boo Boo… and, while I’d say I’m big fans of both of their work in a major way, there are the occasional speed bumps in their careers (THE BLUES BROTHERS 2000 and SHREK THE THIRD). But look at the poster… it’s some cute-looking bears laying around eating picnic baskets… just like the original cartoon series, so at least they got that part right.
The first trailer will be around to check out later tonight, so that’ll give The Kidd a pretty clear indication about whether I’m right to be optimistic, or if this is another lame attempt at raping someone’s childhood. I hope I’m right, and this caters more to the adults than being another dumbed-down children’s movie, because let’s face it… kids these days have no idea who the fuck Yogi Bear is. They didn’t watch him. They certainly didn’t grow up with him. So to slap a 3-D label on him, and call it a day, hoping families will rush out for this is a big mistake if that’s the direction Warners is taking. I’d like to think they know better than that… after all, they did give us INCEPTION this summer… they also gave us JONAH HEX, so the jury is out until the trailer hits. But the poster at least looks to be a decent start, I hope.
