Another Princess Diana Biopic Is Being Made
Unfortunately, Princess Diana’s celebrity was before my time. She died when I was pretty young, so when her death shocked the world, it had very little impact on me. The only thing I knew about her at the time was that she was a princess (no, duh) and that Elton John rewrote the song “Candle in the Wind” as a tribute to her. It’s only now that I realized that she was a philanthropist and was therefore very involved in charity and giving. She became a national icon in Britain. I guess that’s why there’s about three biopics based on her coming out.
Mirror News telling us about another biopic being produced by BAFTA Award-winning producer Stephen Evans (Executive produced CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND and recently produced the IRON LADY starring Meryl Streep) to be released next year with a budget of £30 Million. The flick will be based on a controversial 2007 book by Diana’s bodyguard Ken Wharfe, entitled Closely Guarded Secret. Like the book, the flick will be told from Wharfe’s point of view and will follow the close relationship between him and the former Princess of Wales. The movie will also follow her life before and up to her divorce from Charles.
And of course, we all want to know who will play her in the flick. The rumors are that it’s between Charlize Theron or Carey Mulligan. (ThePlaylist Tweeted that Mulligan isn’t involved) Unfortunately, Evans was tight-lipped about the current favorite, saying “It’s a slightly closed book until we get her. We are looking at one or two relatively unknowns we think could play Diana well, and also one or two very famous people.” They’re also looking at Ewan McGregor to play Wharfe.
It seems like there’s a lot of Diana going around because last year French film company Pathé – responsible for THE QUEEN starring Helen Mirren – were gearing up for their own Diana biopic (simply entitled DIANA), which would span her early years, the marriage, the divorce, and her death. They were looking at Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson. At the same time, there’s another Diana biopic starring Jessica Chastain. This one is called CAUGHT IN FLIGHT, and intends to chronicle her post-Charles relationship with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, which was supposed to be kept in secret.
Lots of hot women being considered for the role Diana. I love biopics, so all of these will be interesting and definitely something to look at. At the moment, I’m just confused at the sudden desire to make multiple movies about the same subject like on Snow White and Linda Lovelace.
