Bruce Campbell Doesn’t Have The Time For Evil Dead 4 Right Now
Ever since ARMY OF DARKNESS came out in 1992, serving as the third flick in the EVIL DEAD series, fans have been clamoring for #4. They want more Ash, more boomstick, more Necronomicon, and more S-Mart. It’s been 18 years, and they are still waiting patiently, remaining optimistic, because up until now, both Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi have left open the possibility that one day it could happen. When might that one day be? No idea, but, for the diehard EVIL DEAD devotees, some day is better than no day, and, if that’s all they have to hold onto, they’re gripping tight. Unfortunately, they might want to loosen their grasp, because, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Campbell once again didn’t kill the idea, but it did render it as not very likely any time soon, and it’s mostly due to lack of time.
“None of us have said no. I think Sam is always tweaking with the idea. He’s joked with a couple of concepts. He has threatened to do it multiple times. He’ll put a false statement out just to torment people. We joke that when he’s got one eye left and I’m in the old actors’ home, that’s when we’ll do it. But we both have day jobs now. The ‘Evil Dead’ movies, you really have to lock up about two years of your life for each ‘Evil Dead’ movie and we don’t really have the time right now. Sam says that he will gladly get back on that track, but right now he’s on that A-picture train and he’s getting a lot more creative freedoms afforded to him with his success. I don’t know that he needs to right now. And I’m kinda busy with the No. 1 show on cable. I don’t think about it a lot because I’m busy doing other stuff.”
Bruce Campbell finally has a regular gig on a show that hasn’t been canceled yet, and is doing very well for itself, and Raimi has the OZ prequel up next and WORLD OF WARCRAFT still on his agenda, so, when they’d be able to clear 2 years of time by Campbell’s estimate is beyond me. It didn’t happen in the years leading up to Raimi taking the reins of the SPIDER-MAN franchise. It didn’t happen at any time in between SPIDER-MAN movies, when Raimi could have taken some time away. It hasn’t come together since Raimi left the SPIDER-MAN franchise, and one would think that, if EVIL DEAD 4 was going to come together, those would have been the opportune times. Sorry, EVIL DEAD fans… things aren’t looking good for another sequel for you, at least not now, and that might spell the end of the series for you. After all, do you really want to see a 65-year-old Ash running around with a chainsaw attached to his wrinkled ass, nearly 30-something years after the last installment? I know some of you answered yes… but I just don’t see it happening.
