wolverine hugh jackman 222x300 Darren Aronofsky Enters The Wolverine 2 Directors RaceJust when you thought Fox was ready to move forward on WOLVERINE 2 with star-producer Hugh Jackman picking director David Slade (THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE) to be at the helm for the X-Men prequel sequel, another name is brought under consideration and in the running for the job – none other than Darren Aronofsky (THE WRESTLER, BLACK SWAN).

According to Deadline Hollywood, Slade is still 1 of 2 names thought to be a finalist for the flick, with Aronofsky a late comer to the party. It was widely believed that Slade was Jackman’s choice to step behind the camera after he was given the thumbs-up by the suits at Fox. But Aronofsky’s relationship with Jackman is what seems to have thrown a wrench in those plans and given pause to the naming of anyone thus far. Aronofsky worked together with Jackman on THE FOUNTAIN, and he would certainly be more of the fans’ choice, based on the previous efforts in his filmography. I’m still not sure the X-Men geeks are ready to embrace a director who has history with TWILIGHT. However, he’s had experience with the Hollywood blockbuster system, something Aronofsky has yet to get involved with. I’d love to see what Aronofsky could do with WOLVERINE 2, as it actually would turn my interest positive towards the project following the awful first movie. It certainly would be visually interesting, something Aronofsky has excelled at thus far.

This is certainly going to be an interesting decision that will ultimately rest on what Jackman views as the future of the WOLVERINE series.
