Edgar Wright Discusses His Take On Ant-Man
Director Edgar Wright has long been attached to bring Marvel superhero Ant-Man to the big screen. However, with all the focus put on Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America heading towards THE AVENGERS, Ant-Man has fallen by the wayside. There have been rumblings as of late that Ant-Man may be introduced in THE AVENGERS, which would then bring about this spinoff. But, regardless of the holding pattern one of the founding Avengers is in, plans still remain for an Ant-Man movie to happen.
Edgar Wright recently spoke to Box Office Magazine about his direction and vision for Ant-Man. “I haven’t actually started the second draft yet–I’m not going to be able to until this film [Scott Pilgrim] is out–but what we wrote for the first draft, and what Marvel really liked, is that it’s funny, but it’s a genre film. It’s about the level of comedy that Iron Man has. The idea is to make a high-concept genre film where it’s within another genre. His suit and its power is the big gadget and it takes place in the real world. I just wanted to do something that was slightly different than the superhero origin film. I felt that between that and the various mad scientist, crazy doctor films that we’ve all seen, this would be a way into an origin that was slightly different. I’m not really a multi-tasker–I haven’t done anything since Marvel liked our first draft.”
Edgar Wright has yet to do wrong by The Kidd with SHAUN OF THE DEAD and HOT FUZZ, and SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD is one of only a few films this summer that get me excited… so, if Edgar Wright is still willing to wait out the process for Ant-Man to happen, I’m willing to wait with him. Of course, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in discussions with Marvel and AVENGERS director Joss Whedon about casting choices for the role and the overall tone of the character, to guarantee that Wright is happy with where things are going and make sure Ant-Man is consistent across the Marvel Universe.
