Guillermo del Toro Chooses His Next Movie… And It Involves Teaming With James Cameron

guillermo del toro 220x300 Guillermo del Toro Chooses His Next Movie... And It Involves Teaming With James CameronFor a guy who finally had to walk away from THE HOBBIT, because it appeared to be going nowhere anytime soon, Guillermo del Toro has managed to line some very nice things up for himself. At Comic-Con, it was announced that he’d be writing and producing a reboot of THE HAUNTED MANSION for Disney. Beyond that, del Toro was very coy about what his next directorial effort would be, only remarking that it would be scary. Well, “scary” certainly describes the creative brainpower that’ll be joining forces on his next film, as del Toro will be partnering up with James Cameron to adapt the H.P. Lovecraft novella AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, according to Deadline Hollywood. del Toro will be back in the director’s chair with Cameron on-board in a producing capacity for this 3-D vision at Universal.

Over at Amazon, AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS is summarized as “the deliberately told and increasingly chilling recollection of an Antarctic expedition’s uncanny discoveries–and their encounter with untold menace in the ruins of a lost civilization–is a milestone of macabre literature.” Yep… sounds like a del Toro movie to me.

MADNESS has been a dream project of del Toro’s for quite some time, having been developed over the better part of the last decade but always put on hold for some other picture. When it last looked like del Toro might be able to do something with it, he elected to take the directing gig for THE HOBBIT, and… well, we know how that turned out.

With THE HOBBIT now out of the way, del Toro can really get going on MADNESS, and, with Cameron attaching his name to it, Universal was more than ready to give this the green light to move forward, as del Toro reworks a previous version of the script. AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS could be in production by next summer, with a 2012 release date certainly in the sights of Universal.

I may argue the shit out of AVATAR not being a great movie, but you will never see me disputing the talents or capabilities of James Cameron. To have 2 separate billion-dollar movies under your belt is an accomplishment no one else can claim, and, as a result, he should be respected accordingly. The guy knows how to make movies that people want to pay to see, and you can’t argue with that kind of success.

So, since you probably haven’t read this Lovecraft tale, what’re your thoughts on a del Toro/Cameron collaboration?
