Joseph Gordon-Levitt Is Planning To Direct And Star In A Comedy He Wrote
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is going places… Do I really have to list all the shit he’s done recently and all the shit he’s getting involved with? Let’s try, there was 500 DAYS OF SUMMER, INCEPTION, and of course, the wonderful 50/50. This year, he has THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, LINCOLN, PREMIUM RUSH, and DJANGO UNCHAINED. That means working for Chris Nolan, Steven Spielberg, and Quentin Tarantino. That’s one impressive resume, you have to admit. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing any of his indie work like MYSTERIOUS SKIN, but fuck if I loved 500 DAYS and have loved the shit out of him as an actor ever since. Well, the guy’s just as ambitious as he is talented with this new story.
Deadline is telling us that JGL managed to get financing for a comedy he wrote and plans to direct and star in the lead. So far Scarlett Johansson also seems to be involved in the flick. The flick is being financed by Voltage Pictures, whose first production was Oscar-winner THE HURT LOCKER with Ram Burgman Productions as well as JGL’s hitRECord films. Apparently, JGL has been pretty antsy to get behind the camera ever since he got back from his hiatus from acting. He’s written other scripts, but decided this was the one worth pursuing. He’s not inexperienced in working behind the camera, as he has a few short films under his belt, but this will (obviously) be his first feature length film. The film is currently untitled.
The flick is summarized to be about a man with loose morals that is likened to Don Juan and his desire to try to fix all the things that make him such a bad person. There are two female leads, one of them is ScarJo, while the other hasn’t been cast yet. Of the interview JGL gave to Deadline, he seems pretty passionate and insanely articulate as he spoke about his film career. It’s not a straight Q&A format as I would have preferred, but from everything I have heard from the interview, I’m just as excited as he is.
As far as I am concerned, the man can do no wrong. I’ve enjoyed everything he’s done so far and to see a flick that was made by him, seems like a real treat. I mean, he just recently covered The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” at a festival panel and he was so brilliant I almost preferred his to Paul McCartney’s. Almost.
