Judge Dredd Becomes Just Dredd
In case you haven’t realized, The Kidd really doesn’t give a shit about JUDGE DREDD, or, as it will be known from this point forward DREDD. According to IM Global, the reboot of the comic book series that was ruined years ago by Sylvester Stallone has dropped the JUDGE part of the title, probably so fans can have trouble identifying the new flick with the comic book series they used to think was awesome and so that other people won’t associate it with the Stallone flop. But, once again, The Kidd doesn’t care. Judge Dredd ceased having any importance in my Infamous mind years ago. I mean, how can one possibly recover from a bad Stallone flick with Rob Schneider involved? You don’t see anyone taking another shot at STOP! OR MY MOM WILL SHOOT, do you?
I realize there’s a big difference between a comic book movie and one that just co-stars Estelle Getty, but JUDGE DREDD wasn’t a well-known comic book to begin with. This is a British comic that has its hardcore fan base, but it’s no Marvel or DC property. I mean, no offense to Judge Dredd, but the average person has no idea who he is, a departure from the popularity of a Superman or Batman or Spider-Man or… you get the picture. Does The Kidd care that Karl Urban has been cast in the lead, hopefully to make Judge Dredd respectable again, since he’s been doing some fine work in other films as of late, namely the STAR TREK reboot? Nope. Does The Kidd care that Olivia Thirlby, known primarily for her supporting role as Ellen Page’s best friend in JUNO, is somehow being worked into this as well, probably as some sort of love interest/partner for the Judge? Nope. That could all change down the line if they’re able to out something together that’s pretty cool from the original Judge Dredd concept. But to call my feelings on DREDD indifferent would actually be an understatement. I’m not looking forward to the movie. I also don’t think they shouldn’t be making it. If they want to try improving on Stallone’s debacle, go right ahead. It’s not like that should be difficult. I just don’t care. That’s my verdict. Case closed.
