New Secretariat Poster Reveals That We’re Going To See A Movie About A Horse
Ever since SEABISCUIT hit big at the box office, it was pretty clear that Hollywood would start making movies about horses that the public had actually heard about. After all, if they’ll come out to see films about the ones they never heard of, clearly they’d pay to watch the stories of legends. And that’s how Disney moved to make SECRETARIAT, the Triple Crown winner who ESPN named the 35th greatest athlete of the 20th century. I’m sure that 31-length ass-kicking he dished out to the rest of the Belmont field in 1973 had a lot to do with it.
Well, with the release heading down the backstretch and racing towards the finish line of October 8 (horse racing puns definitely intended), Disney has released a new one sheet for the film, and, in case you didn’t know, it’s made obvious that this is a movie about a horse that races and is a true story. I guess that works a little better than a horse sitting in-between the Winners’ Circle and the glue factory. It’s a bit more family-friendly, too.
Diane Lane plays Secretariat’s owner Penny Chenery and John Malkovich plays the horse’s trainer John Malkovich, but things have been kept top secret to this point as to who was cast in the role of a lifetime as the champion thoroughbred Secretariat. It’s just a hunch, but I’m going to go with Steve Buscemi… and that’s no disrespect either. He’s a tremendous actor… something this movie needs for such an important role.
