The RoboCop Reboot Looks Pretty Dead
Let’s come right out and say it… ROBOCOP is awesome. There is no getting around the fact that the original 1987 film is a truly bad-ass movie. The idea of a reboot – not so much. However, that didn’t stop from MGM from hiring director Darren Aronofsky to breathe some new life into the franchise with a fresh start, probably taking place sometime after the horrible ROBOCOP 2 and 3. But, with MGM’s financial situation being what it is, there is no movement on any new projects from the studio until they can figure their shit out.
(You can get an interesting read on how MGM got themselves into this mess to begin with by checking out the Financial Times article on the matter.)
Well, it looks like, even if they’re able to pull themselves out of the hole or sell off their assets or do whatever is necessary to satisfy their mountainous pile of debt, ROBOCOP won’t be waiting for MGM on the other side, with reports that Darren Aronofsky has scrapped all plans for the franchise and is moving on with his life. Moviehole reports that one of their MGM sources has claimed that anything and everything ROBOCOP is deader than dead. “Gone. Kaput. Canceled. It was one of the first casualties. [Darren] has lost interest anyway, I believe. Think we’re all just going to have to be happy with the three RoboCop movies that are out there.”
I don’t know how happy we can possibly be with 2/3 of those ROBOCOP movies, but, if all we have to live with is the knowledge of the first movie, I can deal with that.
