Unbreakable 2 Will Happen… Sort Of
I am well aware of the fact that many of you will never see another movie with M. Night Shyamalan’s name attached to it. He could be credited as the janitor on-set, and that’d be too much for you. And I completely understand where you’re coming from. After giving second chance after second chance, THE non-3-D LAST AIRBENDER was the last straw. Frankly, there’s only one Shyamalan movie I like period – UNBREAKABLE – but it’s because of that very film that I keep watching his stuff… just in case he can capture that story-telling brilliance once again.
A lot of you are skeptical about DEVIL, a movie I have no idea why he has his name on. I’ve seen it firsthand in a theatre where the DEVIL trailer plays. Everyone is into it, until his name pops up, and then the groans rain down. But he didn’t direct the film, and he didn’t write the film. He did come up with the story, or at least the idea for the story, but other people were able to take it and run with it, and he’s nothing more than a producer. However, it will fall under the label of his NIGHT CHRONICLES. DEVIL will be the first, and a film called TWELVE STRANGERS, a sort of supernatural 12 ANGRY MEN, will be next. But what will be third…? How about UNBREAKABLE 2?
And just like that, some of you are back on-board the Shyamalan bandwagon. But let me warn you before you get too comfortable… this isn’t the UNBREAKABLE 2 you’ve been hoping for. This isn’t even the UNBREAKABLE 2 you thought you’d be getting. There most likely won’t be a Bruce Willis involved… or a Samuel L. Jackson. To take things one step further, it probably won’t even be called UNBREAKABLE 2. But it’s the third of the NIGHT CHRONICLES that will offer up the story that would have been the UNBREAKABLE sequel.
In an interview with MTV News, M. Night talks about how he got busy with other projects, and that’s really what prevented UNBREAKABLE 2 from ever coming to fruition… projects, might I add, that all wound up sucking and causing quite a few of you to strongly want to punch someone in the face at the mention of his very name, so perhaps he should have stuck to making the sequel. However, it looks like we’re getting the story in some form, as Shyamalan thought it was good enough to expand and turn into its own movie.
“I cannibalized the idea for the sequel to ‘Unbreakable’ for one of the ‘Night Chronicles. It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for ‘Unbreakable,’ and it was too much. There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, ‘I’ll make this the second flick.’”
“I fleshed it out more and more, and thought, ‘This could be a standalone movie.’ I’ll just say it: the third ‘Night Chronicles’ movie is what would have been the sequel [to 'Unbreakable']. So now I need to come up with a new idea.”
I’m all about UNBREAKABLE, and now that it’s playing on AMC, and I can watch it pretty frequently, it’s easy to see how good that movie is. A non-superhero superhero movie…? Works for me, and, while I hear your complaints that it is slow at times, the build works for me, because the payoff is fantastic.
Dazzle me, M. Night. Let someone have made your material not suck, because DEVIL has got my attention, and I hope your NIGHT CHRONICLES hold it long enough that I can see this sort of UNBREAKABLE sequel.
